Born in Massachusetts, Dow was exposed to international influence while a student at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. In the 1890’s Dow worked as a curator of the MFA’s outstanding Japanese collection, which greatly inspired him as an artist and educator. He developed theories about line, color, and the harmony between lights and darks that influenced many artists in the early twentieth century.
