Born in Portland, Oregon and raised in San Francisco, Richard Diebenkorn attended Stanford University and later the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Institute) where Mark Rothko became an influence. Among Diebenkorn's other influences were Pierre Bonnard, Pablo Piccaso, Georges Braque, and Henri Mattisse, whose works he studied earlier while stationed in Washington, DC, during World War II.
